LEARNING THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Technology continues to transform teaching and learning at Minchau providing students with an interactive, engaging learning environment where they can capitalize on their natural aptitude with technological tools to enhance their learning.  We live in a technology and media-suffused environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools, and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. To be effective in the 21st century, citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills related to information, media and technology.  It is our mission to ensure that students have the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.

Stationary and Mobile Computer Labs

Students cannot develop the skills necessary for the 21st century without adequate access to technology.  All students, from Kindergarten to grade 6, have access to computers to support and enhance their learning.  We have a stationary lab of 30 computers, along with pods of computers in our library, front pit, and classrooms.  We also have 3 portable labs of laptops and netbooks with wireless access throughout the school allowing teachers and students the flexibility of bringing the technology into their classrooms. Through the use of technology, students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. They access the internet to locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media to research topics of interest. Digital media is used to present their learning with others through such programs as PowerPoint, Notebook and Publisher, along with a number of web-based programs. Through the on-going use of technology, students learn how to troubleshoot systems and applications, and transfer current knowledge to their learning of new technologies. By continually updating our hardware and software, we are able to keep pace with the ever changing demands of technology, preparing our students for the needs of tomorrow.

Technology in the Classrooms

With the installation of SMART Boards, Airliners, Document Cameras, and wireless keyboards and mice in every classroom, instruction has taken on a whole new look. Both digital still and video cameras are widely used throughout the school to storyboard narrative writing and capture learning moments for future reflections.  The SMART Student Response System is used for on-going assessment and evaluation, providing students with immediate feedback regarding their learning.  The variety of technologies in each classroom allows teachers to create interactive, innovative lessons increasing student engagement, higher level thinking skills, and student achievement.

Videoconferencing

Videoconferencing serves as a very powerful interactive tool for learning by bringing our world into the classroom. Students are able to connect with our global community and work collaboratively with peers around the world. They can participate in cross-cultural exchanges to develop an understanding of different societal values and beliefs, traditions, and perspectives to promote an appreciation of different cultures. This technology allows students to collaborate with experts in various fields around the world, exposing them to a wealth of innovative learning opportunities. They are also able to take virtual field trips that would not be accessible otherwise, such as a live feed to a diver in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia or to an astronaut at NASA. The learning opportunities are endless through videoconferencing!

Minchau Television

“Good morning and welcome to MTV!”  This is how our students begin each morning at Minchau.  MTV is our school wide broadcasting station run entirely by our senior students.  These live broadcasts include O’Canada, messages from the office, book talks from the library, announcements regarding special events and student clubs, and school wide daily fitness routines.
