“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

MUSIC
Our music specialist, Miss Makus, provides opportunities for all students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 to experience voice, instrumental and Orff training through her music program. Students are provided with an opportunity to perform monthly at whole school assemblies, on special evenings such as Christmas Concerts, as well as trips outside of our school.
During the first part of the school year, Minchau students can join the Handbell Club which practices once a week during lunch recess in preparation for performances at the Christmas Concerts. In January, our Choir begins rehearsals so they are ready to perform at our Spring Volunteer Appreciation in.
DANCE
Students have a variety of opportunities to express themselves through dance and movement. These include our Daily Fitness Program on MTV, a strand of the regular music program, and enhanced curricular connections such as Social Studies (Ukrainian Dance) and Phys. Ed. (Folk Dance).
VISUAL ARTS
Through instruction, students learn the techniques and skills involved in creating art, as well as gain confidence in developing their own original pieces of art. Teachers use art as a motivating vehicle for learning in various curricular areas. Students also learn from the masters and become familiar with forms and genres. Student work is displayed throughout the school, highlighted in “Minchau’s Art Gallery”.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Each year, we receive grants from the Artist in Residence Program, a unique opportunity for students to gain skills, knowledge and experience in fine arts by actively working with an artist who shares his or her expertise in visual arts, drama, music or dance.
In November of 2009, we are delighted to welcome a professional artist, Theo Harasymiw, to work with students. She will be working on selected art projects that follow the art curriculum objectives and connect with subject matter at each grade level. Projects will be linked to Social Studies and will focus on the history of Minchau School as we prepare for our 25th birthday. At the end of the residency the students will have the opportunity to share their creations at our Minchau 25th Birthday Celebration on January 22nd. Paula Roberts and The Canadian Music Express will work with students in January 2010 to prepare a musical multicultural celebration with the actual performance being held at our 25th Birthday Celebration assembly.
